The nationwide list of Top Docs is screened and administered by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., a healthcare research and information company. Castle Connolly provides an annual survey to all licensed physicians nationwide, asking each to nominate up to 10 doctors they view as the best in their own specialty and up to three MDs in other specialties. Factors weighed in the nomination process include education, hospital appointment, board certifications and bedside manner. Doctors cannot nominate themselves.
All told Castle Connolly received more than 100,000 nominations this year. Researchers then tracked and narrowed down which doctors received the most nominations and then viewed each physician’s education, training, affiliations, professional activities, licenses and board certifications and verified each had clean disciplinary records. The resulting final list of Top Docs included only 6,800 medical professionals – less than one percent of the nation’s doctors in clinical practice.
